In the next decade, AI agents are set to transform who does shopping for us.

From product discovery and price comparison to automated ordering, subscription renewals, and corporate procurement, AI is evolving from a mere “decision support tool” into an active participant in real-world commercial transactions. Previously, AI stayed in the recommendation layer, helping users discover products or organize information. Today, platforms are increasingly letting AI execute transactions—allowing it to buy, renew, or procure goods under user-authorized parameters. This shift is already appearing across platforms and payment networks:

Amazon and Walmart have been testing AI shopping agents, allowing consumers to complete third-party site purchases without ever leaving their native apps.

Visa and Mastercard are actively building out AI-driven payment capabilities, preparing infrastructure so that intelligent agents can securely transact on behalf of cardholders.

In China, Alibaba is pushing further into the combination of AI and commerce. AI capabilities such as Qwen are already being linked with consumer scenarios like product search, recommendations, and checkout.

This evolution is far bigger than just “smarter recommendation algorithms.” It points to a deeper structural shift in online commerce: Agentic Commerce is emerging. Top consulting firms like McKinsey and Bain project that agentic commerce will drive between $3 trillion and $5 trillion in retail spending by 2030, with 15% to 25% of all online retail transactions executed by AI agents.

Unlike traditional e-commerce, where success is measured by “clicks on a page,” the core of agentic commerce relies on AI executing within a user’s boundary of delegation. As AI transitions from recommending products to completing transactions, the traditional checkout flows built around human clicks must be entirely re-engineered.

Why AI Shopping Agents Demand a New Payment Gateway？

When AI shopping agents start executing live transactions, they need more than just advanced reasoning and data parsing—they need a payment gateway that seamlessly interfaces with real-world commerce.

Traditional cards can support some early-stage agentic commerce scenarios, especially when AI only recommends products and the user still manually confirms payment. But once AI agents start handling automated purchases, subscription renewals, cross-border procurement, and multi-scenario budget management, the payment layer needs to become much more flexible.

Crypto wallets are good for managing stable coins and digital assets, but they do not directly cover most e-commerce platforms, SaaS tools, app stores, or cross-border consumer spending. This is exactly where crypto payment cards bridge the gap. By connecting on-chain capital to legacy credit card merchant networks, crypto cards give AI-driven spending a programmable, globally accepted payment rails natively built for digital-first automation.

What Is Agentic Commerce?

Agentic Commerce is a business model in which AI agents assist with or fully carry out the shopping process, covering product search, price comparison, recommendations, decision-making, checkout, payment, renewals, and even post-purchase support.

In traditional e-commerce, users manually handle every step: searching for products, comparing prices, reading reviews, confirming checkout, and tracking shipping. The user is the main operator, while the platform mainly provides product information and a transaction interface.

In agentic commerce, users no longer need to search across multiple platforms, compare products one by one, or manually check reviews. Instead, they can tell AI what they need, and the AI will handle early-stage filtering and decision support.

For example, a user might ask an AI shopping agent like Amazon:

“Compare and shortlist a 256GB iPhone 17 Pro on Taobao, JD, and Pinduoduo. Focus on price, sales volume, ratings, and delivery speed. Find the best value option that can arrive the fastest.”

The AI agent then automatically handles search, comparison, filtering, and recommendation. It aggregates product information across platforms, compares prices, sales, reviews, store reputation, shipping speed, and return policy, and helps the user identify the best purchase option.

With permission, the AI can go further and add the item to cart, open the checkout page, or even complete payment on supported platforms and payment methods.

In other words, AI shopping agents are no longer just “helping you find products.” They are gradually participating in the full chain from product discovery to purchase decisions to payment execution.

That means the core flow of e-commerce is shifting from: Human searches → Human compares → Human places order → Human pays

to: Human sets the goal and rules → AI searches, compares, and filters → Human confirms or authorizes execution → Payment system settles the transaction

Once AI enters the execution layer, e-commerce platforms, payment systems, and merchant backends all need to adapt to this new transaction actor.

The Core Shift in Agentic Commerce: From Recommendations to Automated Checkout

Most of today’s AI shopping tools are still trapped in the recommendation phase. They are great at summarizing reviews, comparing product specs, finding discount codes, and compiling holiday shopping lists.

These are useful capabilities, but they do not change the core structure of the transaction. The user still decides what to buy, where to buy, and when to pay.

DigitalOcean’s research on agentic commerce notes that AI shopping agents are moving shopping from a manual process to a goal-driven one. Instead of completing transactions step by step, users define an objective, and the agent handles research, comparison, decision-making, and payment.

The real change happens when AI moves from recommendation to execution.

A traditional AI shopping assistant might say: “These three headphones are a good fit, and the second one offers the best value.”

A future AI shopping agent might say: “The second pair is currently priced at $288, which fits your budget. The merchant offers two-day shipping. I’ve prepared the order. Would you like to confirm?”

And if the user has already granted permission, the AI may even execute automatically: “Your target price has been reached. The order has been placed, the budget limit was respected, and delivery is expected on Friday.”

This creates a new end-to-end loop: User intent → Product search → Option comparison → Rule evaluation → Authorization check → Payment execution → Order record → After-sales tracking

Traditional e-commerce systems are built around a human clicking “checkout.” Agentic commerce requires platforms that can support AI-driven transaction flow based on rules.

That means the system must answer questions like:

Is this transaction within the user’s authorization?

Does the AI have permission to buy this item?

Does the purchase match the user’s budget and preferences?

Is the merchant trustworthy?

Is additional confirmation required?

Can the transaction be tracked by both the user and the system?

How should refunds, cancellations, and after-sales support work?

So the real transformation is not just a single payment action. It is the entire chain from purchase decision to transaction fulfillment. That is why payment tools are evolving from simple cards into spending infrastructure for AI-driven commerce.

Why Current E-Commerce Checkouts Aren’t “Agent-Ready”？

Traditional payment and e-commerce checkout flows were built for a very specific assumption: a human user is sitting in front of the screen and completing the purchase manually. The user views a product, clicks to add it to the cart, enters a shipping address, selects a payment method, passes verification, and confirms the order.

This workflow assumes the user is online, can understand the page, can solve CAPTCHA or app verification, can interpret payment errors, and can decide whether to continue at each step. In other words, the traditional checkout flow assumes that a human is present at the moment of payment.

AI shopping agents behave differently. An agent might continuously monitor prices in the background, trigger a purchase condition at 3:00 AM, manage multiple subscriptions simultaneously, or automatically execute procurement based on pre-set budget rules. It cannot organically solve sudden CAPTCHAs, interpret vague bank failure prompts, or pause to wait for manual human confirmation before every transaction.

This exposes a core flaw in the traditional checkout process: it serves “active human shopping” well, but fractures under “AI executing purchases within set rules.”

If e-commerce platforms keep designing checkout only for humans, AI agents may still be able to find the right product but get stuck at authorization, order processing, risk control, payment, or after-sales support.

That also creates a new requirement for payment tools. The payment gateway of the future cannot simply be a static card for manual consumption. It must be optimized for automated AI spending: funds must be easy to manage, stablecoins may need to be supported, and spending should be organized across different use cases.

Authorization: Does AI Actually Have the Right to Place Order?

The first challenge in agentic commerce is not payment itself. It is authorization.

Traditional e-commerce authorization is simple: the user clicks “Confirm Payment,” and the system treats that as permission to complete the transaction.

But in an AI shopping agent scenario, the transaction may not happen while the user is actively watching the screen. The user may set rules in advance and allow the AI to act when certain conditions are met.

For example:

Single transactions capped under $100

Total monthly expenditures capped under $500

Purchases restricted to specified product categories

Payments allowed only to whitelisted, trusted merchants

Manual human confirmation required if the budget is exceeded

Delayed execution required for nighttime transactions

Automated renewals enabled for specific platform subscriptions

This means payment authorization has to evolve from a one-time confirmation into a continuous rule system.

Future commerce systems will not only ask: Has this transaction been confirmed right now?

They will also need to ask: Does this transaction fit the user’s pre-set authorization rules?

That is the first major requirement of agentic commerce: moving from temporary confirmation to programmable, rule-based authorization.

In this model, the payment card is no longer just a tool for final settlement. It becomes part of the user’s budget and control layer, defining what the AI can and cannot spend.

Budget: AI Shopping Agents Cannot Have Unlimited Payment Power

Users will not want AI agents to have unlimited spending authority.

Even if an AI is highly capable, payment still involves real money, real orders, and real responsibility. That is why budget management has become a critical layer in agentic commerce.

The AI does not need a card that can buy anything. It needs a spending account with clear boundaries.

For individual users, that might mean separate budgets for AI subscriptions, daily shopping, travel bookings, cloud services, or software tools. For businesses, it may mean department-level budgets for SaaS, cloud resources, advertising, procurement, or employee tools.

These budgets should not all live in one pool. They should be split, managed, frozen, adjusted, and tracked by scenario.

A future payment tool should not just be a card number. It should be a spending account that can support budgets, rules, and approval logic:

Which AI is allowed to use this budget?

Which platforms can it spend on?

Which transactions require manual approval?

Which ones can be fully automated?

Which expenses should generate reports?

Which anomalies should trigger an immediate freeze?

As AI begins participating in shopping and procurement, the payment system must help users draw boundaries rather than leaving all risk to post-facto review.

This is another reason crypto payment cards matter in agentic commerce: they can connect with real-world spending while helping users separate AI-related expenses from ordinary consumer accounts, creating clearer budgets for digital services, AI tools, or cross-border spending.

Merchants: How Platforms Identify AI-Initiated Orders

Agentic commerce is not only a user-side change. It also changes merchant-side transaction logic.

In traditional e-commerce, merchants deal with human consumers. The user browses the site, clicks on a product, submits the order, and pays. Merchants mainly optimize page design, user experience, payment success, and order fulfillment.

But once AI shopping agents are involved, the merchant may deal with software agents acting on behalf of real users. These agents search for products, read product data, compare prices and stock, choose merchants based on rules, trigger orders and payments, and manage logistics after purchase.

That creates a new merchant-side requirement. Merchants must optimize not only for human eyes, but also for AI systems that need to understand and call product data.

Future merchants may need to answer questions like:

Is this AI acting on behalf of a real user?

Does the user authorize it to place the order?

Is the order information complete?

Is the payment method trustworthy?

Who handles refunds and disputes?

Is the AI-generated order fulfilled like a normal order?

This means agentic commerce is not just a front-end shopping experience shift. It also affects the backend systems for payments, orders, risk control, and fulfillment.

Payment tools must adapt too. They need to support purchases initiated by AI agents, not just cards manually entered by humans.

Risk Control: AI Orders Cannot Simply Be Treated as Anomalies

Traditional risk systems are built around human behavior models such as login location, device fingerprint, transaction frequency, spending amount, and historical order patterns.

But AI shopping agents may behave very differently.

They may compare multiple merchants in a short time, visit product pages frequently, monitor prices continuously, or place orders immediately after a trigger condition is met. From a human perspective, that may look unusual, but in an AI agent scenario, it is normal.

If platforms continue to apply legacy risk logic to flag all non-human behaviors, two major problem vectors emerge: legitimate, user-authorized AI orders will be mistakenly blocked as fraudulent, and platforms will fail to catch malicious bots, scraping scripts, or unauthorized actors masquerading as legitimate AI shopping agents.

So agentic commerce needs a new risk framework. Platforms must not only ask, “Does this look like normal human behavior?” but also:

Is this AI trustworthy?

Does it represent a real user?

Does it have valid authorization?

Does the transaction match the user’s rules?

Is the activity unusually frequent or unusually large?

Risk control will move from identifying human anomalies to identifying agent identity and authorization boundaries.

Orders, Refunds, and After-Sales Service Must Also Be Automated

Shopping does not end when payment is completed. For e-commerce, the process continues with order confirmation, shipping updates, package tracking, invoice generation, refund requests, returns, dispute handling, subscription cancellations, and renewal management.

In a traditional flow, the user handles these tasks manually. In agentic commerce, if an AI agent participates in the purchase, it may also need to help manage the post-purchase flow.

For example, if a shipment is delayed, the AI can automatically alert the user; if a price drops post-purchase, the AI can evaluate and file a price-protection claim; if a subscription is about to increase in price, the AI can warn the user or cancel it; if cloud costs spike unexpectedly, the AI can halt the renewal; and if an item never arrives, the AI can initiate a refund workflow.

That requires stronger connections between payment records, order information, and merchant data.

If the payment system only shows a card charge, the AI cannot easily understand:

Which order does the charge belong to?

Has the item been successfully delivered?

Is this specific purchase eligible for a refund?

Is the subscription still active?

Should the next renewal be canceled?

So the payment system needed for agentic commerce is not just about “charging the card.” It also needs cleaner data and better post-purchase management.

This expands the utility of crypto payment cards from mere “payment rails” to “expense management dashboards.” If users keep AI tools, SaaS, cloud services, and cross-border purchases in a clear card or budget structure, tracking orders, sorting expenses, and handling anomalies becomes highly streamlined.

Transaction Records Must Be Machine-Readable and Auditable

In traditional payment scenarios, users or finance teams only need to know when money was spent, how much was spent, which merchant was involved, and whether reimbursement is needed.

In agentic commerce, transaction records must also serve AI systems and automation tools. Future AI agents and finance systems may need to read transaction history and determine:

Which AI workflow triggered the payment?

Does it fit the user’s budget?

Is the merchant approved?

Is this a duplicate charge?

Should it be reported?

Should the subscription renew next month?

Is there unusual spending?

That means payment records need to evolve from human-readable statements into machine-readable data.

A payment system built for the AI era should not only settle transactions. It should also help users and systems understand the reason behind every payment.

What Capabilities Does Agentic Commerce Require?

Taken together, the new demands that Agentic Commerce places on the e-commerce checkout process go far beyond simply improving payment success rates. Instead, they require checkout systems to possess robust capabilities in rules enforcement, automation, and traceability.

Checkout must upgrade from being a mere “final page where a user clicks confirm” into an active transactional ecosystem capable of managing authorizations, budgets, risk control, orders, and data logging.

New Capabilities

Problem Solved

Significance for AI Shopping Agents

Rule-Based Authorization

Manual verification for every transaction disrupts automation.

Allows AI to execute transactions within user-pre-defined rules.

Budget Account Segregation

Mixing different AI expenditures together makes management difficult.

Segregates accounts by scenarios such as shopping, subscriptions, cloud resources, and team procurement.

Agent Identity Recognition

Platforms struggle to verify if a transaction is authorized by a real user.

Helps merchants distinguish trusted agents from malicious scripts.

Agent-Friendly Checkout

Traditional checkout frameworks rely too heavily on manual human operations.

Enables AI to complete ordering and payment based on rules.

Order Data Synchronization

Fragmentation between payments, orders, logistics, and post-purchase loops.

Supports AI in subsequent tracking, refunds, and renewal management.

Machine-Readable Transaction Records

Legacy statements are unsuited for automated management.

Allows AI, financial systems, and workflows to read transaction reasons and subsequent actions.

These capabilities point to one bigger change: checkout is becoming part of the infrastructure of AI-driven commerce.

Whoever makes checkout easier for AI to understand, easier for users to control, and easier for merchants to fulfill will be in a strong position in the agentic commerce era.

Why Crypto Payment Cards Will Become the New Payment Gateway for Agentic Commerce

In Agentic Commerce, the core value of a payment method is not just to complete a deduction, but to help users integrate AI-related expenditures into a controllable consumption account.

For users who already use stablecoins or on-chain assets, crypto payment cards can serve as a real-world payment gateway. This makes it easier to unify and manage AI tool subscriptions, cross-border shopping, SaaS renewals, cloud services, and digital service consumption.

In our previous article on AI and Crypto Integration, we discussed why AI agents need a more global, low-friction, programmable payment network. In Agentic Commerce scenarios, this trend further lands on more specific consumption links:

How to pay after the AI finds the product?

How to record after the AI renews the service?

How to categorize the budget after the AI triggers procurement?

How to avoid chaos when the AI manages multiple subscriptions?

How can users control it in time when there is an anomaly in AI spending?

Therefore, in Agentic Commerce, the role of crypto payment cards is no longer just to help users spend crypto assets, but further to become a payment gateway facing AI consumption scenarios. Its function is to connect users’ digital assets, real-world merchant networks, and automated AI spending, allowing future AI shopping agents to complete consumption under a more controllable financial structure.

BenPay Card: The Payment Gateway Tailored for AI Shopping Agents

In Agentic Commerce scenarios, BenPay Card should not be viewed merely as a crypto debit card for daily personal expenses. Instead, it serves as a critical payment gateway linking AI shopping agents, stablecoin liquidity, and real-world merchant payment networks.

For individual consumers, it integrates AI tool subscriptions, digital services, cross-border shopping, and daily expenses into a highly flexible capital management structure. For teams and enterprise users, it functions as a unified settlement layer for AI tool procurement, cloud service expenditures, SaaS renewals, and international digital service payments.

The value of BenPay Card goes beyond executing payments. It empowers users to organize automated AI spending into structured financial streams. It helps users place AI automation spending into a clearer financial structure. Which expenses belong to AI subscriptions? Which belong to cloud procurement? Which belongs to cross-border shopping? Which transactions need manual approval? Which services can renew automatically? These can all be managed more clearly through separate accounts, cards, and budget allocations.

Consequently, BenPay Card is better understood as an AI-native spending gateway: through stablecoin deposits, self-custody, multi-chain fund movement, and real-world card payment capabilities, it connects on-chain assets, digital services, and real-world spending, providing a controllable payment foundation for future AI shopping agents and automated procurement.

What AI Shopping Agent Use Cases Can BenPay Card Cover?

Agentic commerce is not limited to buying physical products. It also includes many forms of AI-assisted digital spending and automated purchasing.

Scenario

Tasks Executed by AI Agents

Payment Requirements

Role of BenPay Card

AI Shopping

Comparing prices, monitoring deals, and triggering buy orders.

Stable checkouts and global merchant compatibility.

Connects stablecoin funds to real-world merchant payment networks.

AI Tool Renewals

Managing subscriptions for tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

Recurring payments and granular budget controls.

Serves as a unified expenditure account for AI tools.

Cloud Resource Procurement

Automatically buying compute power, storage, or API credits.

High spending limits and stable funding sources.

Ideal for large-scale digital service expenditures.

SaaS Stack Management

Managing multiple international software subscriptions.

Cross-border payments and unified transaction logs.

Reduces the overhead of managing multi-platform payments.

Automated Sourcing

Executing software, service, or resource purchases based on rules.

Controllable budgets and traceable transactions.

Supports isolating expenditure structures by scenario.

Global Digital Services

Paying cross-border platforms, app stores, travel, and service providers.

Global availability and flexible funding liquidity.

Provides a more versatile gateway for digital consumption.

The common pattern is simple: payment is no longer an isolated action. It becomes part of the AI workflow.

BenPay Card should therefore be understood not just as a payment card, but as a fund bridge and spending tool for AI-native scenarios.

The Future Competition of Agentic Commerce: Beyond Just AI Models

When discussing Agentic Commerce, many people focus heavily on the capabilities of AI models.

For instance, they look at whether the AI can understand user needs, accurately compare products, judge value for money, avoid incorrect purchases, or handle complex tasks. These are undoubtedly important.

However, what truly determines whether Agentic Commerce can achieve mass adoption is not just the AI’s reasoning power, but whether the payment, authorization, ordering, and fulfillment systems can keep up.

If the AI finds the most suitable product but cannot complete the payment, the process breaks down. If the AI triggers a purchase but the user cannot control the budget, the risk spins out of control. If the AI places an order but the transaction records cannot be tracked, finance and post-purchase management will fall into chaos. And if the AI automatically renews a service but cannot detect abnormal overcharges, user trust will drop.

Therefore, the future competition of Agentic Commerce will not only happen at the model layer, but also at the e-commerce transaction infrastructure layer.

Whoever can provide a payment system that is better suited for AI invocation, better controlled by users, and easier for merchants to fulfill will be more likely to become part of the next-generation commercial gateway.

For crypto payment cards, Agentic Commerce also opens up new use cases: it is no longer just a card for users’ personal manual consumption, but can become a payment gateway between automated AI spending, global digital services, and cross-border consumption.

Conclusion: AI Shopping Agents Are Changing the Use Cases of Crypto Payment Cards

AI retail shopping is just the beginning of Agentic Commerce.

The real change is that AI agents are moving from “assisted recommendation” to “active execution.” When AI can help users search, compare, judge, order, renew, and manage expenses, the e-commerce transaction chain must upgrade from traditional human checkout logic to a new structure suitable for Agentic Commerce.

Future payment systems cannot just serve scenarios where humans click a button. They also need to support:

AI executing transactions within authorized boundaries

Users setting budgets and rules in advance

Merchants identifying and fulfilling AI-initiated orders

Transaction records being read and tracked by machines

Deep linkage between payments and orders, refunds, renewals, and post-purchase processes

Smooth completion of global digital services and cross-border consumption

These are the new requirements that Agentic Commerce imposes on e-commerce checkout and payment flows.

Crypto payment cards and stablecoin payment solutions represented by BenPay Card are not meant to replace all traditional payment methods. Instead, they provide a more flexible capital connection layer for AI-native commerce. Through self-custody, stablecoin top-ups, multi-chain support, and real-world card payment capabilities, BenPay Card helps users connect on-chain assets, digital services, and automated AI spending—providing a more controllable and flexible payment gateway for future AI shopping agents and Agentic Commerce scenarios.

Future shopping will depend not just on what AI can help you find, but also on whether e-commerce platforms, merchants, and payment systems can support AI to complete transactions safely, stably, and controllably.

FAQ: Agentic Commerce and Crypto Payment Cards

What is Agentic Commerce?

Agentic Commerce refers to a business model where AI agents participate in the shopping and transaction process. AI does not just recommend products; it can also assist in completing search, comparison, decision-making, ordering, payment, and subsequent management based on rules set by the user.

What is the difference between Agentic Commerce and regular AI recommendations?

Regular AI recommendation mainly helps users discover products or content, and the final decision to purchase is still made manually by the user. Agentic Commerce goes a step further, allowing AI agents to participate in executing transactions within the user’s authorized scope, including automated ordering, renewals, procurement, and payments.

Why will AI shopping agents change the e-commerce checkout process?

Because traditional checkout processes are mainly designed for manual human operations, assuming the user is online, able to confirm, enter verification codes, and handle failure prompts. However, AI shopping agents may execute tasks in the background based on rules, so the checkout process needs to support rule-based authorization, budget control, order linkage, and machine-readable records.

Why are traditional bank cards not completely suitable for Agentic Commerce?

Traditional bank cards and traditional checkout processes are better suited for human-initiated payment scenarios. For automated AI shopping, cross-border digital services, high-frequency small-amount expenses, and auto-renewals, traditional bank cards may have limitations in authorization, budget management, and automation adaptation.

What role do crypto payment cards play in Agentic Commerce?

Crypto payment cards can connect stablecoin funds with real-world merchant payment networks. For AI-native users, it can serve as a payment gateway between on-chain assets and real-world consumption, supporting payments for AI tools, SaaS, cloud services, app stores, and cross-border digital services.

Why is BenPay Card suitable for AI shopping agents and Agentic Commerce?

BenPay Card supports self-custody, stablecoin top-ups, multi-chain asset flow, and real-world card payment capabilities. It helps users establish a more flexible financial structure for different AI spending scenarios, making it suitable for AI shopping, AI tool renewals, cloud resource procurement, SaaS subscriptions, and cross-border digital consumption.

Risk Warning

AI shopping agents and Agentic Commerce are still in their early stages, and automated payments, authorization rules, order responsibilities, and post-purchase handling mechanisms are still evolving. When using AI automated shopping, renewal, or procurement functions, users should reasonably set budgets, limits, and manual confirmation rules.

Crypto payment cards involve stablecoin top-ups, on-chain asset management, and cross-border digital consumption.
